BenchRep GymTracker ("BenchRep") is a strength training app for iPhone and Android. It works without an account and without a server: what you log stays on your phone, and we can't see it. This page explains what that means in practice, including the one time the app goes online. Section 9 covers, separately, the analytics on the benchrep.app website.

1. Who publishes BenchRep

2. What the app doesn't do

No account: the app never asks for an email address or a password.
No server: nothing you enter is sent to us or to anyone else.
No ads, and so no ad tracking.
No analytics: no usage tracking, audience measurement or crash reporting tools.
No selling: we don't sell or share your data, since we never receive it.

3. The data you enter

Everything you log in BenchRep is stored in a database on your phone, and nowhere else:

Your profile, which is optional: first name or nickname, year of birth, sex, height, goals and experience level.
Your weigh-ins.
Your workouts: exercises, sets, weights, reps, perceived effort and notes, plus the personal records they produce.
Your custom programs and exercises, your reminders and your settings.

This information is only used to run the app on your phone: working out your stats, spotting your records, suggesting today's weight and scheduling your reminders. We never have access to it.

4. The only connection: updates

Exercises, videos and programs are built into the app, so it doesn't need a connection to work. It goes online for one reason only: each time it starts, it asks Expo's EAS Update service whether an update is available. This lets us fix a problem or add content without waiting for a new store release. With no connection, the check simply doesn't happen and the app works as usual.

The request contains nothing from your profile or your workouts, and no unique device identifier. It only carries the technical details needed to send the right update, including:

the phone's operating system, iOS or Android;
BenchRep's project ID at Expo and the app version;
the IDs of the updates already in the app;
a random token, created by the app, used to count how many installations have asked for an update.

As with any internet connection, Expo's server also sees your phone's IP address. Expo turns these requests into overall figures we can look at, such as how many installations have received an update.

Expo is a service of 650 Industries, Inc., a US company that processes this information on our behalf and states that it complies with the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, which governs transfers of personal data from the European Union to the United States. 5. Backups

Your data only leaves your phone when a copy is made, either by you or by your phone's system:

Manual export: from the app, you can create a backup file and choose where to send it with your phone's share sheet, for example to Files or by email. The file contains your data, so keep it somewhere safe. You can import it back into BenchRep, on the same phone or on a new one. We never receive it.
Phone backup: on iPhone, the device's iCloud backup includes BenchRep's data. On Android, Google backup and transfer to a new phone include BenchRep's database, and nothing else from the app. These copies are managed by Apple or Google under their own privacy policies, and can be turned off in your phone's settings.

6. Purchase

BenchRep is a one-time purchase on the App Store or Google Play. Payment is handled by Apple or Google: we never receive your name, email address or payment details, only sales reports showing things like the country of purchase and the amount.

7. Notifications and permissions

BenchRep's notifications (end of rest, workout and weigh-in reminders) are scheduled on the phone itself and never go through a server. The app only uses these permissions:

Notifications: optional. Without them the app still works, but it can't tell you when your rest is over or remind you to train.
Vibration: to make the phone vibrate, for example when your rest ends.
Exact alarms, on Android: so the end of your rest goes off on time. Without this permission, Android may delay it.
Run at startup, on Android: to reschedule your reminders after the phone restarts, since a restart clears them.
Internet and network state: only for the update check described above.

BenchRep doesn't access your location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone.

8. How long data is kept, and deleting it

Your data stays on your phone for as long as the app is installed. Deleting BenchRep erases all of its data from the phone. Copies made elsewhere aren't affected: iCloud or Google backups of the phone are managed in your Apple or Google account settings, and exported files stay wherever you saved them.

9. The benchrep.app website

Everything above is about the app. The benchrep.app website measures its traffic and how our ads perform. Nothing you do in the app is linked to it.

Matomo, to count visits. The website uses Matomo, an analytics tool running on our own server (analytics.anass-elyoubi.fr). It works without cookies and is used only for traffic statistics: pages viewed, the site you came from, browser, operating system, screen size and language. Your IP address is anonymized before it's stored, the data is kept for 25 months at most, and it is never shared or used for anything else. As the CNIL, the French data protection authority, allows for this kind of measurement, it doesn't ask for your consent, but you can opt out with the checkbox below. Your choice is then remembered in a cookie, mtm_consent_removed.

Google Analytics and the TikTok Pixel, with your consent. Google Analytics also measures traffic, and the TikTok Pixel measures how our TikTok ads perform. They only measure your visit once you click "Accept all" in the cookie banner. Google Analytics then sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_…, kept for two years, and TikTok sets its own, under its own policy.

Their scripts do load as soon as you arrive on the site, so Google and TikTok receive your IP address and technical details about your browser even without your consent. Until you accept, Google Analytics sets no cookies and only sends Google cookieless signals (time, browser, referring page and the state of your choice), which Google uses to estimate traffic. Google and TikTok may process this data outside the European Union, under their own policies: Google and TikTok.

Necessary cookies. Two cookies, cookie-consent and analytics-consent, remember your choice in the banner for one year.

Changing your mind. To change your choice, delete the cookies for benchrep.app in your browser settings: the banner will show again on your next visit.

10. Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to access, correct and erase your data and to get a copy of it, among others. For the app, we hold no data about you, so you exercise these rights directly on your phone:

See and correct: everything you've entered is visible in the app, and you can edit your profile at any time.
Get a copy: an export creates a backup file containing your data.
Erase: deleting the app erases its data from the phone.

For the website, you can opt out of Matomo and withdraw your consent to Google Analytics and TikTok as described in section 9. For any question, including about the information Expo receives during update checks, email us at [email protected]. You can also lodge a complaint with your data protection authority, which in France is the CNIL (www.cnil.fr).

11. Children

BenchRep isn't intended for children. The app asks for no identity information, and we receive nothing that's entered in it, whatever the age of the person using it.

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the "last updated" date at the top.
